Gothic, or “Gothic script,” refers to a style of penmanship that began in the 15th century and was in use until the mid-19th century when it was replaced by the newer “Roman” style. They were in use for roughly a thousand years, from the 12th century to the 16th. The Gothic Latin alphabet is very close to the Latin alphabet, but the letters are constructed differently. As such, they are all based on Roman letter forms. Gothic lettering or blackletter is a letter style in which the letters are calligraphic, and were developed as a rapid handwriting for Latin.
